“Very Practical & Worth the Time Investment!”

I have listened to Dee speak several times and even though I have been gardening for many years and am a master gardener, I always learn many things from her. She is continually updating her knowledge to include what is new and exciting. ~Amber Gill, Enid, OK

Instagram post 2194078058368032585_9299546 A new Santa pillow from @target along with a throw from @PierI. I have way too much fun with Christmas decorating and last night's party was a great excuse to go all out. Now, that the party is over I think I'll sit here with a cup of tea and do a little online Christmas shopping for the family.
What are you up to on this sleepy Saturday?

Instagram post 2193708666073560272_9299546 It's easy to make a bouquet of flowers with grocery store blooms.
One secret is to have an interesting vase. This is a circle vase from a local florist, but I've also seen them at various stores. You can either place florist's tape across the top in a grid, or use a flower frog, OR, you can do like I did and just start placing flowers in a pleasing arrangement. If you put enough flowers in there, they hold themselves in place.
I thought this turned out really well. The flowers were from. @traderjoes.

Instagram post 2193110036023117808_9299546 Santa is watching for our guests to arrive for tonight's party. He's hanging out with paperwhites, a slow-starting amaryllis bulb and one of my Christmas cacti.

By the by, do you say cactuses or cacti? I guess I’m old-school. I still say cacti even though both are correct.

Instagram post 2192551709652442721_9299546 My paperwhites are starting to grow. We’re having a party tomorrow night, and I’m giving these as gifts to my friends.
These are varieties of Narcissus tazetta that smell better than the standard ‘Ziva.’ ‘Inball,’ ‘Ariel,’ and ‘Wintersun,’ among others. I planted them in vintage milk glass which is super cheap. No container over $10.

This is a fun gift for friends.
Tomorrow I’ll share more of our decorations. Stay tuned.

Instagram post 2185748474350453888_9299546 As you begin working on the turkey, pies and other savory bits for your Thanksgiving feast—if you live in the U.S. that is—I’d like to stop and say thank you!

I’m grateful for your conversation this year and that you continue to follow my gardening adventures on my Red Dirt Ramblings blog, on our @thegardenangelists podcast and here. I’m also on Facebook and Twitter, but I love Instagram best.
Speaking of, I finally got the garlic planted so I’m grateful for that too. This year, I managed to keep myself to two kinds of garlic in an effort to not overspend, and also get them planted. In front is ‘Persian Star,’ and behind it is ‘Mild French.’ I kept back one bulb of each back to cook with. They are delicious. I bought them from @filareegarlicfarm.

To plant garlic you simply separate the bulbs in cloves and push them into good garden soil. Water and wait. You can fertilize the growing bulbs in the spring once the weather warms. I like to put a layer of shredded leaves on top of mine. Harvest in summer after the foliage starts to die back. In my garden, that’s around the end of June.
One more thing...if you want to see my posts, go up to the three dots in the right-hand corner and clickety-click. Then scroll down to “turn on post notifications.” Thanks!

Instagram post 2182996352789756778_9299546 Time to move some of the houseplants back to my bathroom and make way for the indoor bulbs.
So many plants. So many bulbs. I’m constantly looking for window space.

Instagram post 2182115239485523669_9299546 And so the amaryllis show begins. First picture is from yesterday, and the others are from last year. The double red amaryllis is ‘Inferno.’ No, I do not have my Santa Claus in the window yet! I’m still working on Thanksgiving. 😅 I did go grocery shopping yesterday.
If you want to get your amaryllis bulbs to grow and bloom before Christmas you need to plant them right now.

New post on the blog about just how to do that. The link is in the profile. Also, the last two episodes on @thegardenangelists are about amaryllis and paperwhites.
In my story is a video from last year on how to plant an amaryllis. So easy!!! #getyourbulbon #amaryllis #amaryllisflower #inferno #redflowers #paperwhites #gardenblogger #gardenwriter #gardenpodcaster
Instagram post 2180987508035198153_9299546 Our home sweet home over the years.
I’ve been thinking a lot about home while making plans for this Thanksgiving. What makes a house a home?
For us, it’s the comfort we create inside and out, and those things that warm our hearts.
A light in the window. A candle burning with scents of the season. Right now I’m loving Trapp Fireside Pumpkin. Delicious food in the oven, or on the grill depending upon how warm it is outside.
Family coming together to share a meal. Maybe a wreath on the front door and somewhere to wipe your feet.
Clean sheets on the bed. A sense of peace and tranquility.
Houseplants in the windows and on the hearth until new decorations take their place.
These are just my thoughts this evening. I leave you with this Irish proverb I found. “The longest road out is the shortest road home.” I love that.
Thank you all for being part of my little world this year. I’m grateful for each one of you.
