Garden Writer Dee NashMy Story

I was born and raised in Oklahoma, where we “make” gardens — we don’t plant them. It all started with a vegetable garden plan that I found in Kitchen Gardener magazine over 30 years ago (The bunnies ate my first attempt, but I kept trying.)

Or maybe it started when I earned my bachelor’s degree in Journalism–Professional Writing from the University of Oklahoma with an emphasis in Botany. I’m probably best known as the creator and writer of my blog, Red Dirt Ramblings, where I tell the ongoing story of making my garden on the 7.5 acres surrounding my home.

I also take my readers along as I travel around the world and bring them into the kitchen with me for my gluten-free culinary creations.  I’m a new beekeeper, so I share my adventures in beekeeping along with my experiences raising and releasing Monarch butterflies.

With a helping hand from my husband, Bill, who enjoys hardscape building more than gardening, I keep expanding my garden — and writing about it. In addition to my blog, I also write for green-industry businesses that need website content, product descriptions, newsletter articles, and more. I also love hitting the road as a garden speaker, sharing stories, techniques, and laughs with regional and national audiences. Learn more about my speaking topics here.

 My  Books & Writing

My first book, The 20-30 Something Garden Guide: A No-Fuss, Down and Dirty, Gardening 101 for Anyone Who Wants to Grow Stuff, was published in 2014.

I’m also a frequent contributor of articles and photographs to Oklahoma Gardener magazine. I’m a columnist for Oklahoma Living magazine, and I’ve written for Organic Gardening magazine, Fine Gardening, flower magazine, The Edmond Sun, The Oklahoman, the Oklahoma Horticultural Society’s Horticulture Horizons, and The Daylily Journal.

Other clients have included:

American Meadows, Fiskar’s Corporation, Garden Design magazine, HGTVGardens, Lowe’s Home Improvement, and other green-industry businesses.

Red Dirt Ramblings

Red Dirt Ramblings won the Garden Writers Association’s Gold Award for Best Electronic Writing. Better Homes and Gardens named RDR one of its Top Ten Gardening Blogs, and Southern Living magazine named me one of its 30 Bloggers to Follow.

I’m a member of the GardenComm, the Oklahoma Horticultural Society, along with Great Garden Speakers.

Garden Coaching for Oklahoma Gardeners

November 9, 2018 By //  by deenash

Dee Nash in her garden

Let me help you!

Is your landscape more than you can manage?

Or are you new to Oklahoma Gardening and aren’t sure what to plant (or what to remove)?

Do you want a pop of low(er) maintenance color and help plant shopping?

Sometimes you just need an experienced eye to help you up your garden game and make the most of your budget. That’s where I come in!

This is called “Garden Coaching.” (Yes, there’s a name for it!) I’ll help you and your garden put your best foot forward.

Here’s how it works:

Initial (Socially Distant) Meeting

I’ll visit your garden and discuss your priorities with you, including how you want to use your outdoor space, and listen to any concerns you’re having. Then we’ll walk your property together to assess problem areas and highlight opportunities for improvement. You’ll take notes while I make suggestions and offer my thoughts. If you want me to write the notes, I can do that too.

Two years ago this summer  I asked my friend Dee Nash to give me advice and draw a plan where perennials would be more manageable since I do all the gardening.  She knows exactly what is best to plant with the soil  I had to work with. I am so happy with my gardens, they do look beautiful. I highly recommend her, she is the best!

Elena C.

Follow-up Goodies

Once we’re finished with the garden tour, you’re not on your own! Here’s how I’ll help you keep growing.

You’ll receive:

  • An informal landscape drawing I’ll do on premises.
  • Recommendations for plant selection and placement.
  • Suggestions on where to buy plants and supplies.
  • Complimentary text support.

From there, you can grow your garden yourself, or hire a landscape contractor or even recruit  a couple of  college or high school students to assist you. Sometimes, we need strong backs to improve the soil and lay mulch.

With plant knowledge & creative expertise, Dee provided just the right suggestions & advice to help me achieve the perfect results for my garden! I will continue to refer her to my friends who want beautiful landscapes.

Lynette D.

Investment

Plan to spend 1.5 to 2 hours  on your initial appointment if you have a standard suburban property. If your property is more than one acre, it will probably take more time and perhaps a second appointment.

Cost: $80/hour plus travel time if outside the north Oklahoma City metro area for garden coaching visit and shopping help.

I greatly admire Dee’s blog so when I learned she does garden coaching I jumped at the opportunity! Dee’s perspective and fresh ideas were invaluable to me as well as her confirmation that I was on the right track with my own ideas. Dee’s advice helped me take my own skills to the next level- I’m a lot more comfortable trying new things as well as forgiving of myself when things don’t go as planned!

I just had to share this picture of the back garde I just had to share this picture of the back garden from this morning. I love the way the sky is lit as the sun came up. The clouds were really beautiful. I didn’t enhance this photo at all, and I took it with my iPhone 11, but I did straighten it. I tend to take crooked photos. 😂

The snow will take a while to melt, but next week we are supposed to have highs in the 50s. I’ll be doing garden coaching next week which I always enjoy. My garden coaching clients always inspire me.

This year I am in need of inspiration.

Because of the ice storm in October, there will be a lot of changes in my garden this spring.

I will be removing four or five Japanese maples that were crushed in the storm. Also, the shady part of the garden which would be off to the left won’t be so shady anymore. We had to remove a lot of limbs from the trees. My southern magnolia lost a lot of limbs in the December snow storm because the snow was heavy and wet. It will all be very interesting.

I’m going to try to use some native shrubs to replace the Japanese maples. These will feed the birds and other pollinators. Before I plant anything though, I’ll be looking at how the sun comes through the trees. It will make all the difference.

Here’s my Valentine. Bill and I have been marrie Here’s my Valentine. Bill and I have been married 32 years. He always works so hard for our family. I did a little video of him clearing the driveway on my story. I also stood outside and watched him because I love how he works a tractor or a motor grader. Back when our neighborhood roads were gravel, he used to grade them, and I loved how he built up the middle of the road so it drained properly. He still impresses me.

Bill is the one who helped me build our gardens.

Remember my bird photos? He makes sure all the birds have food every night. In fact, he waits until dark so that he doesn’t interrupt them. We jokingly refer to the four bird feeders as Bill’s Bird Cafe. He also fills the fountain on the deck each night so they have water to drink.

Bill is the best. I love him so.

When I took this photo this morning, I was actuall When I took this photo this morning, I was actually writing about how gardening will break your heart. The link to the blog post is in my profile.

I saw this tiny Iris reticulata, and I thought sometimes, gardening victories are small, and you have to focus upon the little things in order to remember spring will come again.

Let me explain. Oklahoma is forecast for a monster snowstorm starting tonight and continuing through Monday. According to the meteorologists, this is our sixth major winter storm since October. Remember October’s ice storm? I wish I could forget it.

Anyway, I’ll share more snow pictures on Monday, but for now, I’m just focusing on this tiny iris I forced indoors. It’s the color of the spring sky, and that’s enough for me.

Ice, ice, baby and Cardinals. So cold, 19F, and Ice, ice, baby and Cardinals.

So cold, 19F, and a lot of snow forecast for Monday.

But, I have a fire in the fireplace, a brisket in the instant pot, and books to read.
